Description
Our ball bearing barens focus on comfort, usability and value for money. Printmaking tools can be very expensive, and these barens can get you started without breaking the bank, while stepping up from using the back of a spoon!
Designed and made by Lee Devonish for Community Studios, this unique handmade ball bearing baren works wonderfully for relief and planographic printmaking, including lino printing, woodblock printing, lithography and monoprinting.
The body is 3D printed in PLA and contains 61 steel ball bearings arranged to provide smooth, low-friction burnishing while applying even pressure across the printing surface.

About This Design
Unlike traditional barens, the ball-bearing design reduces friction between the tool and the paper, allowing pressure to be applied more easily across the printing surface. This can be particularly useful when printing larger areas.
The tall handle has been designed to reduce wrist strain from repetitive motion, helping you to print for longer, but the short button handle is available for those who prefer an overhand grip.
Suitable For Relief & Planographic Printing
- Linocut printing
- Woodblock printing
- Lithography
- Monoprinting
